Welcome to SHRM-LI

Dear Members, Partners, and Friends of SHRM-Long Island,

As 2017 winds down, I hope you are enjoying the splendor of the Holiday Season and taking some time to enjoy the company of loved ones and a little R&R. This year has been a busy one for Human Resources professionals, with no sign of a slowdown next year.

To that end, SHRM-LI wants to assure you that we will be here to help you make your organization an awesome place to work as we continue to provide cutting edge resources, programming, and networking to meet every challenge and need. Our Volunteer Chapter Leaders and partnering sponsors have done a phenomenal job of offering relevant and valuable programs that address emerging issues and career enhancement. We promise to keep that coming!

Exciting things are in store for 2018! In the first quarter of 2018 we will be sending out a Member Survey. This will be the first in a very long time. It is our attempt to connect with all of our Members and solicit your valuable opinions and input because this is YOUR Professional Association and we want to be sure we are meeting your needs and expectations. Your input is vital to the future of our beloved SHRM-LI, so please expect the Survey and respond.

You will also notice a slightly different schedule for the Monthly Meetings and perhaps even a different venue, all intended to accommodate your busy schedules and interests.

Lastly, but most importantly, I want to THANK YOU, for your support and comradery and I invite you to become more active within the Chapter. As HR professionals we know that PEOPLE are at the core of every organization, and SHRM-LI is no exception. Our core is strong and vibrant because of you.

Retirement Plans: The Employee Perspective

What is the employee perspective on employer-sponsored retirement plans?

Qualified employer-sponsored retirement plans can provide a number of tax and nontax benefits to employees. The employee
perspective on these plans should certainly consider the obvious tax deferral and retirement savings benefits. Additionally,
however, employees should consider various strategies to optimize their benefits. For example, employees will approach their
retirement plans most effectively when they take full advantage of employer-matched savings and by remaining with a particular company at least until vesting has occurred. In some cases, moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of borrowing from employer-sponsored plans should be evaluated.

Advance Directives and Paid Family Leave:
A Must for Aging Family Members and Elder Caregivers

The implementation of Paid Family Leave in New York State may help individuals who are caring for elderly family members. However, it does not eliminate problems for the working elder caregiver. In fact, not planning ahead can cause even more headaches for an elder caregiver who is requesting time off under Paid Family Leave. It is critical that your aging loved ones execute Advance Directives, including a Power of Attorney, Health Care Proxy and Living Will.
